Switching to prepaid is one of the fastest ways to lower your monthly phone bill—and you don’t need to give up your phone number. This process is called “porting,” and it’s protected by law. Here’s how to do it smoothly.
Step 1: Don’t cancel your current service
This is the most common mistake. If you cancel first, your number can be lost. Keep your current service active until the port completes—your new carrier’s activation will automatically close the old line.
Step 2: Get your account number and transfer PIN
Your current carrier will give you a number transfer PIN (sometimes called a port-out PIN) in their app or website. You’ll also need your account number. Write both down—or bring your phone and we’ll help you find them.
Step 3: Make sure your phone is unlocked
If you’ve paid off your phone, your carrier can unlock it. Most phones bought outright are already unlocked. We can check your IMEI for compatibility in store.
Step 4: Pick a carrier and plan
Compare T-Mobile Prepaid, Verizon Prepaid, H2O Wireless and Ultra Mobile on our prepaid plans page, or read our prepaid comparison guide.
Step 5: Activate and port
Bring your phone, account number and PIN to Telasco Wireless. We’ll install your SIM or set up eSIM, submit the port and test calls, texts and data before you leave. Most ports complete within minutes; some take a few hours.
Common questions
Will I lose my contacts and photos?
No. Switching carriers doesn’t affect what’s stored on your phone or in iCloud/Google.
Do I owe anything to my old carrier?
If you’re financing a phone or under contract, you may have a remaining balance. Check before you switch.
Can I switch a whole family?
Yes—each line needs its own number transfer, but we can do them in one visit.
