Selling your old iPhone is a great way to fund an upgrade. But selling online to strangers comes with risks—scams, fake payments and no-shows. Here’s how to sell safely and get a fair price.
1. Back up everything
Use iCloud Backup (Settings › [your name] › iCloud › iCloud Backup) or back up to a computer. Make sure photos, messages and authenticator apps are saved.
2. Transfer eSIM and two-factor codes
If you use eSIM, transfer it to your new phone first. Move authenticator apps and check that you can still receive verification codes.
3. Sign out of iCloud and turn off Find My
This removes Activation Lock. A phone that’s still locked to your Apple ID can’t be used by the buyer—and reputable buyers won’t purchase it.
4. Erase the phone
Go to Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Erase All Content and Settings.
5. Know what affects value
- Model and storage size
- Screen and body condition
- Battery health
- Carrier lock status and a clean IMEI
A cracked screen lowers value; sometimes a screen repair pays for itself. We’ll tell you if it’s worth it.
